# Install Visual Studio Code

> Download and install VS Code directly on your Dragonwing device.

## Prerequisites

## Get VS Code on the Device

      This requires the device to have an internet connection. If the device does not have internet access, use Option 2.

    Follow the [VS Code Linux installation guide](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/setup/linux) on the device.

      Download the `.deb` package directly from the VS Code website. The **Snap Store version is not supported** by the extension.
    </Warning>

  <Tab title="Option 2 — Transfer from a host machine">
    <Note>
      Use this approach if the device does not have internet access, for example in restricted network or VPN environments.
    </Note>

    On your host machine, follow the [VS Code Linux installation guide](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/setup/linux) to download the **ARM64 `.deb`**. Then transfer it to the device using one of the following methods:

    **Via SSH (device and host on the same local network)**

    ```bash theme={null}
    scp code_*_arm64.deb <user>@<device-ip>:~/
    ```

    Replace `<user>` and `<device-ip>` with your device credentials.

    **Via USB stick (no network required)**

    Copy the `.deb` file to a USB stick, plug it into the device, then copy it to the home directory:

    ```bash theme={null}
    cp /media/<user>/<usb-label>/code_*_arm64.deb ~/
    ```

## Install VS Code

On the device, open a terminal and run:

```bash theme={null}
sudo apt install ./code_*_arm64.deb
```

Verify the installation:

```bash theme={null}
code -v
```

Expected output — version, commit SHA, and architecture:

```text theme={null}
1.78.1
a4e8254e63e4b7a72896e74e12cc2098fcda1d6e
arm64
```

Then launch VS Code to confirm the install was successful:

```bash theme={null}
code
```
